Calligraphy Tutorial | Calligraphy Resources

So you're brand new (or pretty new) to calligraphy and are a little lost on where to start.
BEEN there. DONE that. Don't blame you a bit.

There are quite a few books and resources out there but we're calling out our favorite GO-TO's.

Books:
Mastering Copperplate Calligraphy (still use this one ALL the time), by Eleanor Winters
Mastering Calligraphy: The Complete Guide to Hand Lettering (which features our very own, Bailey Rivera!!) by the lovely Gaye Godfrey-Nicholls
Our friend Molly Suber Thorpe of Plurabelle's new beauty, Modern Calligraphy

Online:
A newbie on the scene: The Curious Calligrapher is a gorgeous site dedicated to ALL this calligraphy, servicing the calligraphy community. Here you'll find more resources, forums and gorgeous eye candy!

The IAMPETH (or The International Association of Master Penman, Engrossers and Teachers of Handwriting-WHEW!) is a trove of AMAZING resources from the best calligraphers in the world. This site could easily suck up days, even weeks of your life. They also have awesome teaching videos too! This one's too good to miss.

 Locally:
You never know, you may just have a calligraphy mentor down the street! Google-ing "__your city__ calligraphy guild" is the BEST and FASTEST way to find local letter-lovers nearby. Plus, these non-profit organizations also offer workshops, get togethers and moral support (when you just can't get your letters to look quite right).

There really are so many more out there...so be sure to share YOUR favorites in comments section! We always love to hear new suggestions:)

Peace, love and letters,
Emma & Bailey

  1. Oh my gosh, I'm so happy I found your site! I have tried calligraphy on and off for years. I was even an assistant to a professional calligrapher in exchange for lessons. She moved and my life with four kids got busy. This summer we were unexpectedly relocated to Austin and since I only have one child still at home I finally have some extra time on my hands. The first thing did was sign up for Molly Jaques' online calligraphy class through Skillshare. Now I am hooked. I can't get enough. Sadly though, it seems like now that I'm in Texas everyone is doing workshops in LA! I am so excited you will be doing workshops here. So far I have only been able to find good supplies online. Is there anywhere is Austin that sells good supplies for calligraphy (other than Speedball)?

    1. Hi Pam,
You're so sweet! We're glad that you're finding the tutorials helpful. I've heard Molly's class is amazing-she's so awesome!
It's pretty tough to find supplies in Austin but I like Asel Art on MLK and Jerry's can be good too. You won't find nibs there...but they do have some good inks and papers.
Definitely check out the Capital City Scribes (the Austin calligraphy guild) they have great, talented members and occasionally host workshops as well.
I (Bailey) now live in LA...but all of the CCS members are great friends! We're looking forward to the Austin workshop in early 2014!! We'll announce via the newsletter, blog and Instagram as soon as all of the details are finalized.
